An Update from 20-21 Visual Arts Centre

Due to the current Covid-19 situation we have closed 20-21 Visual Arts Centre until further notice.
It's been a long time since we posted to the Education blog here at 20-21, and in that time a lot of changes have taken place. Since March the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the temporary closure of 20-21 Visual Arts Centre and all of our educational and outreach activites.

However, we are taking steps to make as much as possible of our educational activities available online, both for teachers, home educators and parents with children in isolation at home. We have extended our Education blog's remit to cover ARTivities as well - those activities normally available to visitors to our gallery. Our hope is that this ARTivities archive will prove to be a resource for everyone with young children who want to give them confidence in their creativity.

Find our ARTivities archive here.

It's been a while since our last post but that doesn't mean we haven't had lots going on.
20-21 Visual Arts Centre's Education Service has delivered projects, after school clubs, school workshops and developed some new core workshops.

We have lots of innovative and engaging ways for schools to get the most out of our exhibitions during 2017.
Here's just a reminder of what we offer for schools, colleges and other education groups.

20-21 Visual Arts Centre offers the following for future interest.
· Self guided tours which are free, we just ask that you let us know that you are coming.
· Guided tours which cost £20. A Learning Assistant will take you around the gallery and give you additional information on the building and exhibitions.
Both the above can be enhanced by booking the Activity Table for £1 per child where they can create a piece of work relating to the exhibitions.
We also offer core workshops and bespoke workshops. Starting from just £3.50 per pupil.
· Core workshops are workshops that have already been planned and are slightly cheaper. They are based around drawing, clay, print, mess and mixtures, book art and shadow puppet based.
· Bespoke workshops are designed to your chosen topics.

The above can be delivered here at 20-21 or as outreach at your school, except for our screen print  and mess and mixtures workshops which are delivered at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre only.
We also offer project work, after school clubs and teacher training.
Please contact us with any questions you may have regarding what we can offer.

Mess and Mixtures
This is a new half day core workshop for 2017, focusing on science in art through investigating different materials and their properties. Children will work in groups and on their own to create a variety of patterns, shapes and forms from a wide range of materials and processes. The workshop gives children the opportunity to experiment, get messy, have fun with a wide variety of materials whilst having the ‘Science’ behind the chemical changes explained along the way. It’s a balloon popping time! Here is what a teacher from Morton Trentside Primary School said about the workshop “Very organised and hands on, encouraged children to express own ideas and try new techniques. We have lots of ideas on how we can further explore the artists and techniques back at school. We all thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and would highly recommend the workshop to any other school group. Thank you very much”.
Suitable for all KS1and KS2.

Exciting exhibition for 20-21 Visual Arts Centre

We’ve got a really exciting year ahead of us with some of our most ambitious shows yet. Of course, as ever, we will have heaps of innovative and engaging ways for schools to get the most out of our exhibitions.

One of the best-loved pieces by internationally renowned artist, Antony Gormley, comes to 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in March.

20-21 Visual Arts Centre is delighted to present one of the iconic works of British sculpture, on loan from the collection of Arts Council England.
World-renowned artist, Antony Gormley is known for his distinctive representations of the human form which include Gateshead’s monumental Angel of the North and Another Place, an installation of 100 life-sized cast iron figures at  Crosby Beach near Merseyside.
Created in 1993, Field for the British Isles comprises of roughly 40,000 clay figures, sculpted by 100 pupils and their extended families from two schools in St Helens. Gormley was keen to see three generations—grandparents, parents and children—working together to create the piece.
Gormley describes the work as;
“...twenty-five tonnes of clay, energised by fire, sensitised by touch and made conscious by being given eyes… a field of gazes which looks at the observer making him or her its subject”.

There will be an education pack available for schools to make the most out of a visit to see this moving installation. We will also be offering a clay workshop where your school can have their own Field Sculpture.

The Field for the British Isles opens on 14 March and runs to 27 June.
There are a number of educational opportunities available with all our exhibitions, from self-guided tours to workshops created just for you on any topic. For more information, please get in touch.

Students and Pupils, Old and Young, All Enjoying 20-21

Last Thursday (4 December) was a busy one here at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre as we welcomed visitors from both St Luke's Primary School and North Lindsey College.

The group from St Luke's came to look at Nick Sharratt's 'Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants' exhibition. The exhibition explores the colourful world of  internationally-renowned author and illustrator, Nick Sharratt, so it is excellent for school groups to explore not only art and design, but also literacy.

The neoprene costumes in the exhibition, based on some of Nick's illustrations, proved to be really popular with both staff and pupils!

Whilst they were here, the St Luke's pupils also made use of our Activity Table. Using ideas from Nick Sharratt's lift-the-flaps books 'Fancy Dress Farmyard' and 'Fancy Dress Jungle', they designed their own fancy dress costume for a sheep, pig or chicken.

Photography students from North Lindsey College, meanwhile, came to look at Simon Longworth's photographs. Brought up in Winteron, Simon worked as an army photographer during a 6 month tour of Afghanistan, documenting army life from the dramatic to the mundane.

Although they came primarily for Simon's poignant photographs, the students just couldn't resist a quick snap of themselves in our Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants comic façade - and we don't blame them!

(Not the NLC students - they wouldn't let us ruin their street cred')

St Luke's joins the expanding list of schools that have visited or organised a visit to see Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants here at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre. Don't worry if your school haven't booked their visit yet, there is still time before the exhibition closes on 21 February.
You can contact us to book a visit to any of our exhibitions for your school or college on 01724 297070, or email us at education.2021@northlincs.gov.uk.
