Arts Opportunities for Schools

Welcome back and a big Happy New Year from all here at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre.

We are starting 2014 off with a huge amount of enthusiasm regards Education at 20-21, because we have so many tempting offers for school engagement right through the year.

Firstly we have three major opportunities to work with internationally acclaimed artists, for this term and next:

Dominic Heffer is offering an enormously exciting workshop. His bold images and sculptures currently adorn the halls of our galleries, and we are working with him to get as many schools and children involved in his new project as we can.

Have you class work with Dominic to design and create a fantastic Baked Bean Making Machine, using skills in design and technology, art and creative and critical thinking.

This offer is open to Primary and Secondary schools but is only available until April 2014! We predict that this workshop will be very popular, so we advise getting in touch as soon as you're able.

David Hancock's workshops at 20-21 have proven extremely popular in the past. Children and adults alike get the opportunity to work alongside a prestigious artist to create a self portrait using artist skills such as scaling up and colour blending.

David will tailor the workshop to cater for a half day or full day booking, with a maximum of 20 pupils from Secondary schools only.
A full day booking will include the opportunity to dress up, have your photo taken by the artist and then scale the image up to go away with a colourful self portrait.
For information on how to book this popular workshop at a time convenient for you, please contact us to check availability. This workshop is running from February to May 2014.
Virtual World Workshop and Volatile Light
Highly esteemed theatre company IOU are bringing one of their most exciting exhibitions to 20-21 for two weeks only in May 2014.

"Volatile Light is a mesmerising sound and light installation. Featuring an array of specially made machines, LED lights will be attached to rotating arms, levers and cranks to weave a series of eccentric curves, sweeping arcs and hectic scribbles in the darkened gallery space.
The IOU Virtual World workshop allows participants to learn about 3D design and architecture, physics and mathematics, along with the ability to gain and understanding of computer programming, virtual reality and the gamification of theatrical mechanics."
Prices of all the above workshops vary from artist to artist. Contact us as soon as you're able to ensure a booking can be made to suit your school and our artists' availability. Email education.2021@northlincs.gov.uk or call 01724 297070

Comic Art Masterclass with Kev F Sutherland!

Last Friday we were very excited to welcome famous comic artist Kev F Sutherland to 20-21 Visual Arts Centre!

Kev F draws for The Beano, Dr Who, The Simpsons and many more, meaning we were extremely lucky to have him join us to celebrate the opening of our Judge Dredd exhibition.

25 pupils from Crosby Primary and three young people from The Darley Centre worked with Kev F to create a comic using the techniques he taught us during the session.

We got to watch Kev create loads of famous comic characters, including Judge Dredd, Batman, Manga characters, Dr Who and loads more! See who you can spot on this fab creation due to be exhibited at 20-21 very soon!

We got to see the actual artworks that Kev makes the feature in loads of comics worldwide!

Kev made us all giggle a LOT when he was showing us his Beano comics and pointing out that he discretely puts his name on each page! See if you can find it in this special jubilee edition of The Beano.

We learnt that Bart Simpson is just a lot of letters thrown together to make a cartoon!

While pupils all worked hard to create our drawings and new comic characters, Kev drew the cover of the classroom comics, using a title we had all chosen together.

Kev F made the cover for the class comics and each child got to draw a tiny little drawing in the background, while he drew portraits of all the pupils.
Kev F drew a portrait of each pupil to feature in our editions! What a treat to be able to go home with a portrait of each of us drawn by a famous artist!

Kev F used his fabulous photocopying skills to shrink the pupils' drawings down so they all feature in a comic for them to take home.

The day was full of laughter, creativity and lots and lots of comics! We hope he'll visit us again soon!

TAKEOVER 20-21

It's TAKEOVER DAY today! A day where children and young people across the country get to have their say on issues and services that affect them and their future.

Here, in North Lincolnshire we're lucky enough to have Takeover run as a week long event, for young people to get the maximum experience out of the opportunity.

20-21 were really keen to be involved in such an exciting week, so asked art students from John Leggott College and North Lindsey College, to come along to our centre to help us think of new ways to bring young people into the centre, and encourage students to use our facilities in their studies.

Biffy and Aiden, wrote a report about the sorts of things they got up to and what they think to 20-21. Below, is their article and a few photos taken during their time here:

During takeover week we have had discussions about the progress of 2021 Visual Arts Centre and how it could be improved to accommodate for teenagers. The ideas that we came up with were student open, competitions/fundraisers for charity, photography and fashion exhibitions and more publicised workshops.

On the first day we discussed the ideas above and how we would improve the amount of visitors to the centre. A variety of problems such as publicity of the centre and its location mean that the general public are unaware of its presence. The need for convenience means that the centre is not an ideal place for people to congregate and it is hidden by the library. We suggested that ‘posts’ could be placed in front of the library and at the bus station in order to draw attention to what the centre has on offer.

Activities and events suitable for young people

Pros and cons
The second day was more practical as we worked in a team to create a Christmas tree out of cardboard and general craft materials.

Tomorrow we plan to present our findings in ‘The Great Debate’ to other young people. We would like to inform people of our opinions that will hopefully make the 2021 Centre more successful as it is an important part of our community. Offering expressive freedom to the general public, from children to adults 2021 enables community integration but also the ability to explore thoughts and ideas.

The atmosphere at 2021 is relaxed and professional which allows for comfortable viewing of exhibitions (of contemporary artists), which are refreshed every few months to maintain public intrigue/interest.

The students Christmas tree is on loan to the stand at Great Debate, before coming back to 20-21 to be included in our Winter Wonderland exhibition, alongside some prestigious local artists.

The staff at 20-21 really value the input of our group of Takeover students, and were suitably impressed with some of their creative talent! We are looking to develop a few of the key points raised during their time with us. If you are interested in being a part of the student focus group, or have any ideas for the name of the group, please get in touch with our Education Officer, Hayley McPhun: hayley.mcphun@northlincs.gov.uk
