Art Superheroes!

Scunthorpe Church of England Primary School saved the day last week! We had an unfortunate cancellation with another school, but had already done lots of preparations and were drumming up a lot of excitement in the building, so needed a replacement school stat!

Step in our Superheroes in the shape of  Scunthorpe Church of England Primary's year six pupils! 27 pupils descended on the centre and used their special creative powers to design and make some of the most colourful superhero capes we've ever seen!

The afternoon started with us all coming up with as many words as we could think of, associated with Superheroes. Then we were challenged to draw one of the words, in 30 seconds! Super drawings skills!

Once our super creative juices were flowing, we visited the Judge Dredd exhibition, which features loads of comic heroes. We studied the shapes and recuring patterns of their logos and symbols. This is Hayley, the Education Officer, demonstrating what Judge Dredd's helmet looks like:

We spent a lot of time sketching and carefully observing how comic artists make stories through drawing.

Back in the Education Room, we used the Judge Dredd exhibition as inspiration for designing ourselves as superheroes. Each pupil had to think of their super powers, who their arch nemesis might be and what our logos would look like.

These logos were then drawn as big as we could make them, and cut out to create a stencil for printing.

Hayley helped us to make solid shapes, like stars, hearts and sheilds.

Then for the messy bit (it got so messy that there isn't much photo documentation of the actuakl process because we were all so busy cleaning up and printing!), to screen print our logos onto the specially made capes. The fabric we used was all floaty and light so when we run around with our capes on, we look like we are flying!

We had loads of fun with our friends

Our capes had to be left behind to dry, meaning 20-21 could get some quick photos before we were reunited with our super creations!

With the current climate regards attitudes to arts education at a low ebb, this workshop was a lovely opportunity to have children leave feeling fulfilled knowing they are creative, unique and that art makes them powerful individuals.

Education at 20-21 would love to deliver this workshop more often and are looking to have it embedded as a core offer for next year.

Get in tough if you have a class full of Art Superheroes who need some snazzy capes!

20-21 would like to give a HUGE Superhero thank you to Scunthorpe Church of England for stepping in so last minute and another HUGE Superhero thank you to Lee Beel, to photographed the day's events, which means we now have some snazzy images to use all over our website!

Comic Art Masterclass with Kev F Sutherland!

Last Friday we were very excited to welcome famous comic artist Kev F Sutherland to 20-21 Visual Arts Centre!

Kev F draws for The Beano, Dr Who, The Simpsons and many more, meaning we were extremely lucky to have him join us to celebrate the opening of our Judge Dredd exhibition.

25 pupils from Crosby Primary and three young people from The Darley Centre worked with Kev F to create a comic using the techniques he taught us during the session.

We got to watch Kev create loads of famous comic characters, including Judge Dredd, Batman, Manga characters, Dr Who and loads more! See who you can spot on this fab creation due to be exhibited at 20-21 very soon!

We got to see the actual artworks that Kev makes the feature in loads of comics worldwide!

Kev made us all giggle a LOT when he was showing us his Beano comics and pointing out that he discretely puts his name on each page! See if you can find it in this special jubilee edition of The Beano.

We learnt that Bart Simpson is just a lot of letters thrown together to make a cartoon!

While pupils all worked hard to create our drawings and new comic characters, Kev drew the cover of the classroom comics, using a title we had all chosen together.

Kev F made the cover for the class comics and each child got to draw a tiny little drawing in the background, while he drew portraits of all the pupils.
Kev F drew a portrait of each pupil to feature in our editions! What a treat to be able to go home with a portrait of each of us drawn by a famous artist!

Kev F used his fabulous photocopying skills to shrink the pupils' drawings down so they all feature in a comic for them to take home.

The day was full of laughter, creativity and lots and lots of comics! We hope he'll visit us again soon!

Welcome Back and All Aboard for Literacy Links Central!

Welcome back to the start of what looks like an exciting new school year! We have returned raring to go after a successful first year as Education at 20-21, with what's looking like another successful year ahead of us.
Education at 20-21 are hitting the ground running with four extremely enticing exhibitions for schools and teachers. This Autumn term 20-21’s galleries will be jam packed with exhibitions that hold tremendous links for delivering creative sessions in literacy, visual literacy and language.

All Aboard for Literacy Links Central!

Helen Snell’s “Burnt Out” will be her biggest solo exhibition to date, displaying new works developed around her research and time spent at the National Maritime Museum. Burnt Out is an ambitious new exhibition of work by an award winning artist, who uses digital laser and water jet cutting techniques to create her exquisitely detailed work.
This exhibition features large scale works made especially for the space at 20-21. The work cut from steel, acrylic, paper, card and fabric tells tales of exploration, survival and the quest for knowledge in hostile and extreme environments.
This exhibition runs 5th Oct-18th Jan. Below are some examples of Helen Snell's past work.

Tracey Holland’s exhibition “Atlas of Charged Space” uses photography, film and collage to create site-specific installations that explore the links between science, mythology, religion and history. Using light, silhouette and transparancy she creates a distinctive visual language, rich with spellbinding fairytale-esque stories.
There are direct links drawn between Tracey Holland's work and that of Helen Snell's, by considering the artists' abilities to trell stories without words, encouraging people to think beyond the boundaries of the artworks before them. Both these exhibitions sit very neatly with teaching visual literacy and creative language.
This exhibition runs 19th Oct-11th Jan. Below are some stills taken from Holland's films.

Jane Bevan gathers countryside and woodland debris on daily walks near her home in Derbyshire. These foraged finds include bark pieces from fallen trees, thorns, feathers and pine needles - treasures which are so often overlooked. Once collected she then uses traditional techniques of tying, binding, stitching and twining to make sculptures and vessels for the home.
By bringing these natural, found materials inside, she asks visitors to take a closer look at the details of nature and to admire and enjoy the texture, colours, strength and versatility they offer.
Jane Bevan has very kindly loaned 20-21 a touch box of materials she has gathered and manipulated, meaning pupils and staff can handle mini sculptures and make small works from them.
Bevan's "Walks with Nature" links directly with the work of Tracey Holland and easily incorporates studies of literacy as well as science and mini beasts.
This exhibition runs 7th Sept-2nd Nov. Below are some images of Jane Bevan's beautiful sculptural works.

Our Judge Dredd inspired exhibition plays host to tributes to the cult classic comics as well as displaying some original artwork from artists and collectors. Two school workshops have been offered for pupils to work with comic artist Kev F. Their artwork will feature in the exhibition which runs 12th Oct-7th Dec.

Never before has 20-21 held so much potential for teachers and schools to take advantage of core and bespoke workshops, guided tours and loan pack hire. For information on any/all of these options take a look at our up-to-date website, Education Offer page of this blog, pop in for a chat or call our Education Officer on 01724 297070 or email education.2021@northlincs.gov.uk.
